McHenry

John McClean became the first recorded settler of the city of McHenry in 1836. He may have chosen the area for the scenic Fox River which runs through the center of town, or for its lakes and forest – some of the same reasons that people today enjoy living in the area. McHenry County’s name has a heroic history. The county was named after Major William McHenry, a noted leader in the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk War in 1831-32.

Today, McHenry is not only a close-knit small town connected via public transportation to Chicago, but also a premier recreational destination. Residents of the area are able to enjoy a large variety of outdoor opportunities including boating, swimming, fishing, hiking, camping and horseback riding. In Moraine Hills State Park, residents and visitors alike hike and cycle on trails winding through a scenic landscape of glacial boulders, unique red oak woodland, wetlands, wildflowers and an abundance of birds. In the winter, cross-country skiing is popular on the park’s trails.

The local Fox River meanders through the lakes in the Chain O’Lakes State Park, connecting them and winding throughout the city. Two local golf courses are the Boone Creek Golf Course and the Chapel Hill Country Club. The latter is located along the Fox River and features rolling hills along with river and woodland views.

Although northern Illinois may not bring to mind pick-up games of beach volleyball, volleyball games are all the rage in the summer at the town’s beachside sand courts. Beaches on the area’s lakes are frequently visited by local families. Additionally, a well-utilized kids’ skate zone park adds to the recreational offerings oriented towards the community’s families.

Numerous festivals are held throughout the year including a Family Fall Festival and activities throughout the holiday season. One of the highlights of summer in McHenry is the town’s "Fiesta Days.” This 11-day event begins the weekend after the 4th of July celebrations. Activities and competitions are held in various venues throughout the city accompanied by food, drink and artisans displaying their wares. There are a number of museums showcasing local history and culture in McHenry County including the Rolling Meadows Historical Museum, Fox River Trolley Museum, Illinois Railway Museum and the Seven Acres Antique Village and Museum. In nearby Wisconsin, the Big Foot Beach State Park and the Richard Bong State Recreation Area provide further recreational opportunities.

McHenry has quality educational opportunities for both children and adults. Younger students are served by McHenry School Elementary District 15, which is made up of six elementary schools and two middle schools. The McHenry High School District has two campuses in town. Residents also have access to McHenry County College, an accredited junior college which also offers professional development and adult education courses. There is an active public library system which provides homework resources, genealogy research services and a diverse calendar of events. The McHenry Senior Citizens Club offers a wide variety of social events and clubs.
